Birding Hotspot: Exploring the Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider Beach

Malibu Lagoon is a picturesque coastal estuary located in Malibu, California. It is situated at the mouth of Malibu Creek, where it runs into the Pacific Ocean. The lagoon is known for its ecological significance, serving as a vital habitat for a great number of bird species, fish, and other wildlife. It’s a great spot to go birdwatching!

The lagoon is known for its rich biodiversity, including many migratory birds that visit over the winter. The area is easy to explore - walking trails, boardwalks, sandy beaches, and observation decks provide stunning views of the lagoon, its surrounding wetlands, and the ocean beyond.

The nearby Surfrider Beach is also renowned for its excellent surfing conditions. Walking the beach in front of the Lagoon is beautiful on both sides. Ocean waves with some skilled surfers on one side, and a huge variety of birds on the other! The beach leads to the Malibu Pier, which is fun to walk out and explore. I really like piers, so if I’m this close to one, I will most definitely walk out and see what it’s like.

Here are some of the birds that have greeted me at the Lagoon and Beach! If you know me, you know… I go for the Brown Pelicans, I stay for the other birds. Oh, and a Snowy Plover makes any grey day a bright day! :)

Have you been to Malibu Lagoon or Surfrider Beach? I’d love to hear about your visit!
